Kamin Science Center (Re)Launch

Saturday, 2025 September 13

On 2024 January 20, Pittsburgh philanthropists Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin announced the amazing gift of $65 million to the then-Carengie Science Center. As a child, Daniel Kamin had been a regular visitor to The Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science, the predecessor to The Carnegie Science Center. In fact, young Daniel Kamin built his first telescope at the Amateur Astronomers Workshop on the Lower Level of Buhl Planetarium.

The public (re)launch of The Carnegie Science Center as the Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Science Center occurred on Saturday, 2025 September 13 with a free-of-charge admission day for the general public.

Daniel Kamin Telescope Exhibit

Daniel Kamin, at the age of 13 in 1955, built his own reflector telescope in the Amateur Astronomers Workshop on the Lower Level of the original Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science. Using this telescope, the young Dan Kamin took a photograph of the Moon in March of 1957. Located on the first floor of the Kamin Science Center, across from the Admissions Desk, is an exhibit displaying this historic telescope and the photograph of the Moon.
